New Year's Eve - the Movie!

So this post was a no-brainer. I mean the movie's title is literally the name of the holiday we all just celebrated.

If intricately woven stories of love (in all forms of the word) is your kind of thing -- then you will probably love this movie. The star-studded cast could be a big help too. I mean come on! Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron, Lea Michelle, Katherine Heigl, Bon Jovi, Sarah Jessica Parker, Ashton Kutcher, Robert De Niro, Jessica Birl, Halle Berry, Josh Duhamel, Seth Meyers.... The list literally goes on and on.

The movie has a pretty resolute message. That life is full of love, if you just take the time and look around. Wether it's with that ex you never quite go over, a stranger in a broken elevator, or with the love of your life and your new-born baby. Whether it is searching for that love of life, the love of family and friends, or the love of the past. No matter what kind of love it is, it's out there. And it's waiting to be found. So stop sitting at home waiting for love to slap you in the face, go out and do the things you love - see what this great big world has to offer - and you might just stumble upon something magnificent.

Avatar!

Not the crappy M. Knight Shyamalan version either. The amazing James Cameron version! Now don't get me wrong, I like me some Avatar the Last Airbender, but the movie was a bit of a flop...

Anyways..

Now if you've been around me for any length of time, you know that my all-time favorite movie is Avatar! I have watched it more times than I can count, and I keep coming back for more! Well I watched it again just a few nights ago, but this time I thought to myself: "Self, why do you like this so much?" And you know what I came up with? It's the ride. Literally from the beginning of the movie until the end, I feel like I am on that proverbial roller coaster of emotions. Laughing when they're flying on the ikran, crying as the tree burns, baring my fist at the enemy, smiling softly as they make their escape, biting my nails during the battle, overwhelmed with joy as it comes to the end - its enough to make me crazy, and I love it!

The cherry on top? The movie has a powerful message - take time to understand those who are foreign to us. Don't ignore them, or judge them inferior. Learn from them, teach them, share with them.

Holmes, Sherlock

So I just caught up on all things Sherlock a few days ago and I think the BBC deserves a hardy round of applause for this one! Not only is the show beautifully written and acted out phenomenally, but it also forces us to ask questions about ourselves.

Do I notice the small things?
Am I quick to judge those around me?
Do I have complete trust in those people I call friends?

You see Sherlock (the person) has this amazing ability to notice the smallest details and then use the science of deduction to come up with very accurate hypothesis about people, places, etc...

He sees, and then he judges.

You I and I do the same everyday; however, the big difference is we are not always right. Me make assumptions, pass judgments, and form conclusions based on the details we choose to see. We are usually wrong and cause all kinds of problems and, unlike Sherlock, we don't have a trusty ex-military sidekick to bail us out! A Dr. Watson. A man that trusts in Sherlock even when everyone else has turned their backs. We should be so lucky.

So what I am saying and what this show made me realize is: unless you are a certified genius in the science of deduction - stop making judgments! And, strive to be a Watson and a Sherlock. Find a friend who you can trust no matter what, and be that friend that people trust!

Each post should have some vague (or not so vague) references in them, from all of these things I indulge in. But what can I say, I'm a nerd!
